TOLEDO, Ohio, August 22, 2018 – Toledo Express Airport (TOL) celebrates today the one-year anniversary of American Airlines’ twice-daily flight to Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT). The addition of this service to TOL helped drive the airport’s fifth consecutive year-over-year increase in passenger service for 2017. A total of 196,937 passengers flew through TOL last year – a nine percent increase over 2016 – and marks the highest passenger total at TOL since 2008. The momentum is continuing in 2018, as the airport is expected to see its sixth consecutive year-over-year increase this year.

“American Airlines made a multimillion dollar investment in this region one year ago by adding nonstop service to Charlotte,” said Paul Toth, President and CEO of the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority. “This investment has paid off as the fantastic community response to this new service continues to demonstrate the strength of the local economy and the demand for additional flights at Toledo Express.”

Approximately 54,689 passengers have utilized the new CLT service from August 22, 2017 through July 31, 2018. The route, which provides an estimated economic impact of $15.4 million on the local economy, has been so successful American Airlines will increase its capacity to CLT by 26 percent next month by adding larger aircraft that will offer first class seats.

In 2011, the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority with a Small Community Air Service Development grant in the amount of $750,000 to help kick start new service at Toledo Express Airport. These grant funds were instrumental in securing the new Charlotte service.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport is the second largest hub in the American Airlines network and the third largest airline hub in the world, with more than 650 daily departures to over 150 destinations in 24 countries. A multitude of new domestic and international one-stop connections have been made accessible from Toledo because of this service, including seven European destinations and 18 Caribbean destinations.
